Hummingbird Wars

8/23/09

One red feeder three sip holes.

Who are they kidding?

Only one bird can feed

At any time.

Guard dog hummingbird

Bigger than the rest

Shaped like a tiny football

With a long beak.

Rufous with his dark

Red/brown coloring

Dominates the others

Hungry, desperate for food.

He doesn’t even sip

The nectar, life giving,

Instead wastes his energy

Chasing off others.

Hummingbirds need to eat

Every so often to survive

And most of that energy

Goes into hovering.

So how much is left

In the search for life

When they buzz the feeder

For nothing except a chase?

The tiny bombers whir

Across the porch

Back and forth

Like little helicopters.

One poor thing looked

At the red spot on the

Decal on my window

Hoping for a sip.

Then he took a close look

At the red top of my

Coffee cup, hoping

I would share.

Nothing here for you

Little buddy.

Guess you’ll have to

Fight it out with the bully.

Three feeders were hung

Trying to provide for all

But Rufous took up vigilance

On a branch overseeing all three.

He charged from one to the other

Chasing off the diners

From the abundance he

Could never consume.

Big ideas come in little packages

Dominance usually in the larger

Can’t we all just get along?

There is plenty for all.
